WHEN COOKING WHY NOT TRY:

"*" Use low fat ingredients instead of full fat
"*" Use cornflour instead of roux to thicken sauces
"*" Substitute cream in sauces for alternatives such as yogurt or use half the amount mixed with skimmed milk
"*" Cut all visible fat off meat
"*" Use soya alternatives instead of meat

Cooking by numbers

Cooking by numbers is an eight-week course run by Adult Basic Education in partnership with the ‘get cooking’ team.

The course offers a chance for participants to learn more about healthy eating options and have a go at cooking up some really good food. Each session provides practical opportunities to improve basic number skills with the chance for participants to achieve an SQA numeracy qualification at the end of the course

Participants enjoying a Cooking by Numbers training courseThis course provides numeracy learning embedded within very practical tasks relating to cooking and healthy eating.  The curriculum is based on tasks relating to the Core Skills Numeracy curriculum.  All learners will have the opportunity to work towards achieving Core Skills Numeracy accreditation, at the appropriate level.

The main aims of the project are:

1) To engage new learners in literacies learning by providing the chance to learn practical skills and gain a qualification and

2) To enable learners to gain the skills necessary to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
